MAC was formed by mayors of automotive communities in December 2008, as the domestic automotive industry was in crisis, to give local governments a voice in the national debate about the future of the industry. In 2012, MAC widened its mission to include all manufacturing communities to become the Manufacturing Alliance of Communities.
MAC provides communities with a strong and unified voice in Washington and works to ensure that federal policymakers understand local concerns and needs. MAC leverages its strong relationships in Congress and the federal agencies to effectively advocate for federal resources for economic development, brownfield cleanup, job training, and technical assistance.
